Hello, I'm a support worker and I have been working with a young man with MWS in his twenties. He has been using Facilitated Communication a method by which he requires assistance to point to letters on a photocopied laminated keyboard - and we have had fantastic results. He has been writing poetry and is starting to work on his first book. The great thing is that it is maximising his choice making and independence and he is communicating his wishes and dreams. Although Facilitated Communication (FC) has had lots of controversy, I absolutely believe in it - it has blown the "intellectual disability" label out the window for this young man - who has demonstrated his intelligence and determination to live an "ordinary life" Branko Funda

Hi, I am interested in how you began the FC. Lauren, my daughter is 15 now with MW and is nonverbal. She uses some sign language and gestures and the PECs for communication but seems frustrated at times. I really do not believe she understands letters, words, etc. but I would be interested in learning more on how to begin the FC. I am in the USA, NY and I have read some controversy with he FC and most of our teachers are not too interested in FC. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Take Care, Joan
